Laure de Sagazan, the French savoir faire that touches the ‘truth’ of brides.

Since he opened his Parisian atelier in 2011, Laure de Sagazanhas earned the admiration of brides and specialized press thanks to his casual, sober and languid silhouette designs. Quickly the wedding imaginary was filled with her wedding dresses. Laure herself confessed to us that at the beginning she only wanted to make a quality product, dedicating her time to each garment. He never imagined that ‘Laure de Sagazan’ effect that would be generated (and so much ‘cloned’).

The firm was born without thinking about it. Laure was working as a designer in a fast fashioncompany when she was commissioned by her best friend (and now partner) to make her wedding dress, as she couldn’t find what she wanted. At first the atelier was in her own flat, but her brilliant and surprising success led her to move up to four times the first year.

Days ago, the designer offered a breakfast in her atelier in Barcelona to which Tendencias de Bodas was invited. Our friend and collaborator the photographer Sara Costaattended on our behalf, and has brought us these beautiful images and nice interview(-9.). Your personal impression? That Laure de Sagazan has managed to develop an organic brand, with all the French savoir faire(-24.), which touches ‘the truth’ of brides.

Interview with Laure de Sagazan

– Everyone has a word to define Laure de Sagazan. But how do you define your own style and your girlfriends?

I think we try to create brides that have a poetic aspect by making a mix between traditional and novelty, and to create surprise by keeping a form of tradition. In other words, we are always going to find a way to be able to surprise. We try not to propose that traditional bride we imagined a few years ago.

– On your website you tell us that you are inspired by the French cinema of the 50s and 60s: Why did you imagine that bringing that casual style to the concept of bride could make sense? Why move away from the nuptial stereotype?

The cinematography of Gainsbourg or Godart evokes many images and muses in my head. For example, Serge Gainsbourg has made all these French actresses like Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve or Jane Birkin sing, and it is in them that I think when I design wedding dresses. Very strong women with personality, who have raised a fairly powerful universe … It is these women I would like to dress.

– It is again another ‘truth’, that of that universe formed by these women with so much personality.

It was a little dream. It’s a bygone era, it’s over, so the way to reach them was to have them in my head and wear them. That has dictated the first drawings of my collections.

– 7 years after opening your atelier in Paris you have points of sale in 14 countries and you are a referent of the style boho. Did you imagine the success that your designs would have and that so many brides would cry out for such a different concept?

We had never imagined that we would be so successful, that’s for sure. We began by really wanting to embark on this adventure and propose new dresses for brides. We did not think that we would have an echo outside France and that we would resonate in Spain, in Japan or in the United States, and that was our biggest surprise. To see that the creations we made, that those little drawings I made alone in one room meant something to so many women, is magical! And even today, with every collection, when we see enthusiasm and success, it’s always a surprise. I can’t believe it touches so many people.

For Laure de Sagazan the bohemian fluid style is exhausted and she feels that the brides begin to want something with more structure, mature and more ‘woman’

During the general conversation at breakfast, the designer confessed that her ‘favorite’ wedding dress would wear a mixture of lace and would be very elaborate, reminiscent of the brides of yesteryear. He also shared with us the model best-sellerof the firm, a reedition of 1930 very simple in appearance but that marks the silhouette. Even so, we asked him our last question:

– If you had to choose only one of the dresses in your collection, what would it be? and why?

I made my wedding dress, which was a mixof several models (and which is one of the favorite of the partner of the firm). The perfect dress is difficult to choose, although for me it would be the one that allows me to do a job well done, with many small details. A wedding dress that will look good to many women, who when wearing it will have all its meaning. We try that each model is flattering in the silhouettes, that it has nice details…

Laure de Sagazanconfesses that the fluid bohemian style is running out and feels that brides are beginning to want something with more structure, a little more mature and more woman. Perhaps these are the clues to what we’ll see in their next collection… We’ll know in October, when they present it at New York’s bridal fashion week, although everything seems to indicate that yes, a new stage is coming for the firm(-9.), since after six years doing its campaigns with the same team (which it considers a family) and in France, its newshootinghas been carried out in Morocco. Want to see it!
